mercury cleanup

Mercury Cleanup

Mercury has very unique properties, along with highly toxic effects. Elemental mercury will vaporize at room temperature creating a toxic atmosphere rather quickly. Exposure to mercury can permanently damage skin, the brain, the respiratory system, the central nervous system, the kidneys, the eyes, and developing fetus. Due to the toxicity of mercury and public safety and health, it is imperative that proper mercury cleanup procedures be conducted in response to a spill or release.mercury image

Mercury qualities

Mercury, also called liquid metal or silver, does not have the qualities of a typical liquid or metal. It is not magnetic and does not soak into items, rather it runs off. When trying to pick up mercury, it scatters into small beads and roll very quickly, thus spreading the mercury contamination further. Special personal protection equipment and tools and supplies are required to clean up a mercury spill.

What should someone do if they have a mercury spill?
